Northwest Nazarene University recently announced the launch of a new English Th.D. in Practical Theology in the summer of 2024. NNU is the first institution of the Church of the Nazarene in the United States or Canada to offer Th.D. and Ph.D. in theology degrees.
“After the excellent launch of our groundbreaking Th.D. in Practical Theology in the Spanish language in 2023, we are excited to announce that we are launching this same Th.D. degree in English in the summer of 2024,” said Dr. Brent Peterson, Dean of the College of Theology & Christian Ministries. “This degree will equip and empower persons for robust formation while providing opportunities for groundbreaking research in areas of scripture, theology and church history, all in service to the church. We are excited to help equip pastors and leaders for their ministry in the church and the academy.”
The English Th.D. program follows the launch of NNU’s Spanish Th.D., which began in the summer of 2023 with a full cohort of students. The response was so positive that NNU started the process to launch an English Th.D. as well.
Both Th.D. programs focus on teaching and research that benefit the theological lens of the global church. These degrees are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and are nearly fully online, so students do not need to relocate to Idaho to participate in the program. The student will only need to come to campus two times in five years. Both programs are taught in the Wesleyan theological tradition and are one of the only non-residential Th.D. programs accredited by ATS. Pricing is highly competitive for Th.D. programs at only $600 per credit hour (for 53 credits).
