Head Coach, Volleyball

Biography: Doug English begins his 12th season as head coach for Northwest Nazarene Volleyball in the fall of 2024.

During his time leading the Nighthawks, NNU has an overall record of 166-119 (.582) and a 111-79 (.584) GNAC record. The Nighthawks have advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament three times under English.

Over his tenurethe volleyball program has had 10 AVCA All-Americans, three D2CCA All-Americans, eight All-Region performers, one GNAC Player of the Year, one GNAC Freshman of the Year, one GNAC Newcomer of the Year, and his players have earned 25 All-GNAC selections. NNU has also been ranked as high at No. 10 in the AVCA Top 25 national poll, and were the NCAA Statistical Blocking Champions in 2014 and 2015.

In 2017, NNU reached the NCAA Regionals for the second-straight season, going 25-5 overall and 16-4 in GNAC play. At the regional, they won their opening game with a 3-2 victory over Central Washington. In 2016, English led the Nighthawks to the NCAA National Tournament and to the program’s first national-tournament victory as NNU advanced to the second round.

In 2014, the Nighthawks won the GNAC Championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament, and English was named the GNAC Coach of the Year and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) West Region Coach of the Year.

Prior to NNU, Doug spent two seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Delaware. The Blue Hens reached the second-round of the NCAA tournament in 2011 and finished second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2012. English also served as the assistant for two years at George Washington University and three years at Boise State University. As the recruiting coordinator at both GWU and BSU, English recruited a class in 2008 that was recognized by PrepVolleyball.com as one of the top 105 classes in the nation, earning “Honorable Mention” recognition by the organization.

English was a four-year starter for the Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team, where in 2003 he was a first-team AVCA All-American on the court. Doug was also a 2003 first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) selection and a member of the 2003 World University Games training team. At Cal State Northridge, where he earned his B.A. in Mathematics Education, English was also a four-year MPSF All-Academic selection and was named the 2004 Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

Doug is married to Mindy, they have two daughters, Sydney and Lyla, and live in Boise.
