Biography: Dr. Chase has taught at NNU for 29 years in the Biology and Chemistry departments. She earned her degree in Biology/Chemistry from Point Loma Nazarene University, a PhD. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University, and a MSc in Digital Biology from the University of Manchester (UK). She teaches biochemistry, genetics, bioinformatics/biostatistics, and general biology mainly to biology majors. In the church, Dr. Chase works in the children’s department and serves on the church Board. For more than 2 decades she was a Bible quizzing coach and led Bible quizzing for the Intermountain District of the Church of the Nazarene.
What is your favorite thing about working at NNU? She has loved her career at NNU because her paid work is to help young adults to understand more about their science and faith in God and how to grow in both. Additionally, she gets to work with colleagues who also love to do the same!
Share a few facts about your specific area(s) of expertise that you bring to the classroom. For more than 35 years, Dr. Chase has been actively engaged in biochemistry, genetics, and bioinformatics research. Currently, she studies the biochemistry of human uterine cancer in order to identify risk factors and therapeutic targets for this disease. She brings this active set of research skills and perspectives into her classes so that students are learning about the current problems and approaches of the biological sciences.
Share a few pieces of information that represent your teaching experience and why you love working with students. An additional role filled by Dr. Chase is as the premedical advisor. She is responsible for mentoring those students planning to become medical doctors (MD, DO), or PAs. Such students need to work on preparing their portfolio for application, including shadowing, service, MCAT (pre MD/DO), personal statements, and committee letters. She delights in helping students to navigate this and to identify their calling in medicine.
