Biography: I was born and raised in Moscow, Idaho, just recently “retiring” from public school music teaching for 34 years. I am married with two children, a son in Boise and a daughter in Meridian. Share a few facts about your specific area(s) of expertise that you bring to the classroom: I received my Masters of Music Ed. from the University of Idaho and have a Level 1 Orff certification. I have taught in numerous districts in Idaho, primarily small rural schools where I was the only music instructor, often K-12., teaching elementary and directing band and choral ensembles. It allowed me the opportunity to dig in and learn it all. I was able to draw large percentages of the student body into the music program in several districts where we were recognized regionally and nationally. I served as one of the IMEA presidents for eight years, starting the mentorship program during my tenure. My classroom was used for undergraduate students as a teaching lab, allowing me the opportunity to work simultaneously with public school students, collegiate pre-teachers, and music educators in their first few years as professionals. I have learned so much and am so grateful for those who opened doors for me to learn and share.
Share a few pieces of information that represent your teaching experience and why you love working with students: I love the excitement of the Fall season, when the school year begins as a clean slate, to make of it what we will. As a music educator, I often have the same faces in my classroom from year to year and the challenge is to make each experience fresh and pertinent, regardless of the level. Beginning and Middle School Band students might be my favorite, if I had to choose, as they begin the year with rough skills and grow over a nine-month period to experience success both individually and cooperately. They have unharnessed energy and it was always my job to make sure I was in front, leading and guiding and not being left behind.
