Starting college in the fall? Start to prepare NOW to make your transition easier. Here is the Ultimate College Check-List to get you started…

Basic Skills To Master

  • Learn how to do your own laundry and change your own sheets
  • Practice putting things in designated spots (e.g., trash in the trash can, laundry in the hamper, chargers in a drawer); your roommate will thank you and it will be much easier to keep things organized when you are living in a very small space!
  • Find 3-4 simple budget-friendly late-night snacks that can be prepped in your dorm room and master making them (Don’t know where to start? see our list!)
  • Get into the practice of managing your time so you can work, study, hang with friends and still have time to sleep too

Technological Things To Take Care Of

  • Get login information and passwords for Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify and any other accounts you rely on when you are at home
  • Consider upgrading your cell phone plan (Hey…if your parents are ever going to go for it, it’s now while they are being sentimental about you leaving!)
  • Make sure the computer you have has updated/renewed access to the programs you will need in college and that you have any needed chargers, accessories, extension cords and surge protectors

Money-Related Things To Check-Off

  • Pay your deposit and complete all forms on your Applicant Status Page
  • Create a monthly budget with your parents (and talk about who will contribute what!)
  • Research banks close to your college campus (bonus points if they have a branch close to your parents’ house too so they can send you money)
  • Complete any necessary forms that will give your parents permission to legally make decisions/assist you in case of emergency (like needing more money put into your account!)

University-Specific Things To Do

  • Make plans to attend any activities planned for new students (e.g., Admitted Student Days, Jumpstart, NNU Launch); these are HUGE in helping prevent you from looking like that “lost freshman” your first week of classes
  • Be active on the university’s social media accounts and start connecting with others who will be attending
  • Start accumulating some of those smaller “must-haves” you will need for your dorm room, but wait on the bigger things until you can coordinate with your roommate (see our list on page XX for what you will need)
  • Begin exploring your new town; check out TripAdvisor and start making a list of all the local things you want to do or spend some time on Google Earth virtually exploring the neighborhood

Last Minute Things To Accomplish

  • Print photos of your friends, family, pets and favorite places that you know you’ll miss
  • Fill your summer bucket list with lots of fun memories
