If you’re starting college soon and still don’t know what you want to major in, take a deep breath—you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not behind. People may ask, “What are you going to study?” Your parents may worry that they’re investing in an expensive college education without knowing what their return will be! But you’re ok—really, you are.
Being undecided is often seen as a negative thing, like you lack direction or are unmotivated. But in reality, being undecided can be one of the smartest positions to be in when starting college. And here’s why:
You’re Not Supposed to Have It All Figured Out
College is a huge transition. You’ll be juggling new classes, new people and usually living away from home for the first time. Expecting yourself to also have your entire future figured out at 18 or 19 is, honestly, a bit unrealistic. You will change a lot during college. Your interests will grow, your strengths will become clearer, and your career goals might shift entirely. Being undecided, at least right now, gives you the freedom to explore before locking yourself into a path.
Exploration is Valuable
Being undecided means you get to dip your toes into a wide variety of subjects. That required psychology class might ignite a passion for human behavior. A random elective in environmental science might make you want to save the planet. College is one of the few times in life where exploring different paths is encouraged—take advantage of it.
And here’s the thing: sometimes what you think you’re interested in during high school might not be what truly excites you once you’re in a college-level class. There’s no shame in discovering that you want something totally different than what you expected.
When You Do Close in on a Major, You’ll Make a More Informed Decision
Instead of picking a major based on what your parents want or what sounds “impressive,” you’ll be making your decision based on real exposure to subjects and fields. This means you’re more likely to choose something that truly fits your skills, values and interests—not just what looks good on paper. Students who take the time to explore often end up more confident and committed once they do choose.
Undecided ≠ Unmotivated
Being undecided doesn’t mean you’re not driven. It means you’re thoughtful. It means you’re taking the time to make a smart decision rather than rushing into something you might regret. That’s not lazy—that’s strategic.
Finally, Resources Do Exist to Help You
Of course, there will come a day when you have to declare a major if you want to graduate. There are resources out there if you’re still feeling stuck. Use your academic advisor as a sounding board, visit the campus career center and take a look at where some of our NNU students have landed in their careers! You’ll be surprised—let them inspire you.
You’re not supposed to figure this out all on your own. At the end of the day, college is about discovering who you are and what you want to do. If you’re undecided, that just means you’re still discovering—and that’s perfectly okay. In fact, it might even give you an edge. So don’t stress. You’ve got time, and you’ve got options. Embrace the journey—you’re right where you need to be.
