DR. SCOTT DANIELS ELECTED 44TH GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

Jun 21, 2023 | News

Thursday June 15, during the Church of the Nazarene’s General Assembly in Indianapolis, Ind., Dr. T. Scott Daniels, Northwest Nazarene University former NNU Scholar in Residence, alumnus and Senior Pastor at Nampa College Church of the Nazarene, was elected as the 44th General Superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene. Daniels is the first-ever general superintendent with an undergraduate degree from NNU.

“We are so incredibly proud of Scott,” said NNU President Joel Pearsall. “His heart for the Church of the Nazarene, knowledge of Wesleyan theology, ability to clearly articulate the practical application of that theology in a 21st Century context, and commitment to people around the globe make him perfectly suited to assume this highest leadership position in the Church of the Nazarene. NNU regrets that he will no longer be available to serve NNU students as a faculty member, but we are excited and encouraged regarding this new calling that he has accepted.”

Daniels has been serving as the Senior Pastor at Nampa College Church of the Nazarene and has been teaching at NNU in the College of Theology and Christian Ministries. Previously, he pastored in Pasadena, California and Richardson, Texas, and served as the dean of the School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University. Daniels received his BA from Northwest Nazarene University and his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he also received his Ph.D. in Christian Ethics and Theology. He is a frequent guest speaker, and has authored and contributed to several books, journals and magazines.

“I’m so grateful to be trusted with this important position,” Dr. Scott Daniels said. “I’m humbled to be able to serve the Church of the Nazarene and thankful to Northwest Nazarene University and Nampa College Church for the many years of partnership in ministry and teaching. NNU played an important role in my preparation for ministry and I’m thrilled to be able to support NNU and NCC in a new way as general superintendent.”

Six general superintendents, elected by a two-thirds vote of the General Assembly from among the eligible ordained elders of the Church of the Nazarene, constitute the Board of General Superintendents. The role of the general superintendents is to provide apostolic and visionary spiritual leadership as outlined in the Church of the Nazarene’s Manual. Daniels will serve alongside Dr. David A. Busic, Dr. Gustavo A. Crocker, Dr. Filimão M. Chambo, Dr. Carla D. Sunberg and Dr. Christian Sarmiento, who was also elected during the 2023 General Assembly.

The Church of the Nazarene is comprised of 30,610 churches globally, over 2.7 million members, 18,817 ordained elders, 773 ordained deacons and 10,869 licensed ministers. Its General Assembly is composed of ministerial and lay delegate representatives elected by district assemblies of the Church of the Nazarene, along with other church leaders, and is held every four years to consider revisions to the Manual, elect members of the Board of General Superintendents and members of the General Board of the Church of the Nazarene, which has governing responsibility for the global Church of the Nazarene between general assemblies. The next General Assembly will be held in 2027.
